When I started writing The Outing, my first book, my head was inside a different story. I remember sitting down to write and looking out the French doors (they really were doors in France). Opening my laptop I decided to check the news before getting underway. Classic procrastination. But this time it led to the start of an obsession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A headline caught my eye. The story was about a thirty-year-old suicide verdict in the NSW (Australia) Coroner\u2019s Court being overturned. It was now murder. A gay hate crime. And as I sat thinking about this poor man and his family, I almost wasn\u2019t surprised to feel tears rolling down my face. It brought up all the fears I\u2019d had for my own son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also stirred an urge to know more. I tried to talk myself out of it. I needed to get on with my current project. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

But the feeling wouldn\u2019t leave, and I began reading the original articles, then looking at other news about other gay men who\u2019d been attacked and killed. I didn\u2019t even know there was such a thing as a ‘gay-panic’ get-out-of-jail-free card. It was like they were all my son, and I couldn\u2019t lose the horrible guilt, the sense of powerlessness, the overwhelming sadness, and the anger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robert became the focal point of this feeling and the main character in The Outing, and I couldn\u2019t not tell his story.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 As the mother of a gay son the story of Alan Turing, the first gay man on a British banknote was one of the many to motivate me to write The Outing. The news articles i read about this man brought tears to my eyes. Alan was an outstanding computer scientist and a war hero but that didn\u2019t spare him from what some have called a \u201cwitch hunt\u201d of gay and bisexual men in the U.K., which led to the imprisonment of thousands of gay men and those suspected of being gay throughout the 1950s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In January 1952, Turing was prosecuted for indecency over his relationship with another man in Manchester. Despite being referred to as a \u201cnational asset\u201d during this trial by character witness Hugh Alexander, the head of cryptanalysis at the Government Communications Headquarters, Turing was persecuted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Outing<\/em> is my very first audiobook, and bringing it to life has been a much bigger journey than I ever expected. Over the past year, I taught myself everything from the ground up \u2014 choosing and learning recording software, settling on Audacity, figuring out how to use it properly, and learning how to record my own voice in a way that was clear, consistent, and true to the story. Then came the editing: listening back, cutting, fixing, re-recording, and slowly shaping raw audio into something listenable and professional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a lot of work \u2014 far more than I imagined \u2014 but it mattered to me to do it right. The Outing<\/em> is a story I believe in deeply, and I wanted to make sure it was available to people who prefer to experience stories through sound rather than the page. Audiobooks open stories up in a different way: more intimate, more immediate. Getting this story out there in audio form felt important, and I\u2019m proud that it\u2019s finally available for listeners to discover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
